Introduction

Bloom Labs collaborated with Professor Schmitz Weiss at San Diego State University on an innovative community mapping research project that launched in August 2026. As the technology partner, Bloom Labs led planning and development for the project's initial phase, which encompassed an interactive online map that let San Diegans draw the shape and boundaries of their neighborhood, followed by a series of questions about how they connect with local news and information.

Bloom Labs led the planning and strategy for the software infrastructure, user experience design, and data workflow and management of the project's map interface. The result allowed Professor Schmitz Weiss to gather unique perspectives from residents, which she will further use in her leading research on spatial journalism.

More information and links will be provided at a later date.
